Every year in a specific season we find some species of bird migrating from one region to another, this process is called Migration of Bird, and these species of birds are called migratory birds. After a specific time, they again return to their places. This process is still now wonder for us. How these birds move such a long way identifying the same route every year, is a great question for the scientists.
Classification of Bird migration:
Bird migration can be divided into 3 classes.
👉 Short distance migration: This type of birds rarely migrate from their place. Even at the time of migration, they move a very short distance. Such as Clamator jacobinus, Clamator coromandus, etc.
👉 Middle distance migration: This type of birds migrate seasonally from one place to another but in a short distance comparing to long-distance migration.
👉 Long-distance migration: Some birds move in a long distance. Sometimes they travel nonstop for one week or more. In this time they travel more than a thousand miles. Example: Anas platyrhynchos , Anas penelope, Aythya fuligula, etc.
Why do birds migrate?
Migration is very important for many species. They are biologically dependent on this process. Mainly they migrate for suitable weather, enough eating, breeding, etc.
In the extreme winter season of the Northern Hemisphere, the birds travel to a warmer region mostly in the tropical zone. In this time occurs a great inadequacy of food in the north. So the birds move to the tropical zone where the weather is much warmer and there is found enough food and grains for them.
Again after two or three months, the birds return to their place. In the meantime, the regions turn warmer and the spring season starts there. So, the birds again can enjoy new leaves, fruits, grains, and enough insects.
How do birds learn to migrate?
In this migration, birds do not travel randomly. Every year they try to follow the same route. It is seen that this way is easiest for them and they may have enough resting place in this route.
Some species of birds are taught migration by their elder team members. But in some cases, it is found that the young birds which were separated from their team at a very early age also can travel in the same way. So, now it is proved that seasonal migration is an instinct character for most bird species.
Ecological importance of Bird migration:
Our nature is dependent on all its creatures. The birds that come in an individual season play a great role in the ecological balance. In this new area, the birds take shelter in the forests, wetlands, or sometimes at the crop fields.
The birds eat fruits and flowers from forest trees and spread seeds to distant areas. It helps much to increase the forest area. These birds improve the pollination of our crops. Moreover, some birds eat pests and save our yields. In some cases, birds are the carrier of harmony between the two nations, because a border cannot stop the birds.
Some Disadvantages of Bird migration:
Migratory birds fly away from distant places in a specific season. In this long journey, they can carry many contagious diseases like Bird flu.
Not only that, sometimes the birds are so many that they cause great harm to the yields. It may cause a great loss to the farmers.
Some Migratory Birds are in crisis:
Some migratory birds are now endangered and human activity is mostly responsible for this. Bird hunting is one of the main causes of this extinction. Besides, deforestation, filling up the water reserves, etc. affects much in this case. In some years birds do not come to the same place where they had to come a few years ago. The causes mentioned in the previous lines, are also responsible for this.
Bird migration is an inseparable part of nature. Migratory Birds are not only necessary for us; they are the beauty of our nature. Different colors and mind-blowing chirping of these birds can make us happy at any time. So, we should not hunt or harm them. Hunting and selling these birds are now strictly forbidden. So, we should not catch them in cages, because the open sky and huge nature is their roaming field.
